Basic Strategy II |

When You Have Eleven. This is much like ten, except you should double an eleven against 2 through 8 and hit against the 9 through Ace. And again I can hear the experienced Blackjack player let out a yell!
I don't like to attack the dealer when he has a 9 through Ace showing. If that's the way I play, why would I tell you to play differently. I imagine your money is just as important to you as mine is to me. Whenever I sit in a casino and see players doubling down with tens and elevens against the dealer's 10 or Ace, I look away. It's too difficult to compete against a power up card by trying to improve a ten or eleven with only a one card hit. And that's all you get when you double down one card! A year ago, I appeared on a radio talk show in New York and one of the questions was from a woman who wanted to know what she should do with an eleven against the dealer's nine. I told her to hit and she told me that all the books she had read advocated doubling down. I asked her if she was winning in those situations and she said she was losing most of the time, but was afraid to vary from advice she had been following for so many years: "Always double down with eleven." Well, I gave her new advice. And that advice also goes for you if you think the same way she did.
I don't know if I convinced her, but while I was talking to her, a man from Middletown, New Jersey, was also listening to the broadcast. The next day he came to my school and signed up immediately. He said he had read six or seven books on Blackjack and they all urged doubling down with eleven always! This man was fed up with that particular strategy because it was beating him. He wanted me to teach him my way because I was the first "expert" he ever heard of who dared to have a different idea. People have been told over and over that they should always double down with ten and eleven. I stress a more conservative style of playing. For you novices who are being introduced to the game, follow my Basic Blackjack Strategy . When your first two cards add up to eleven, double down only when the dealer shows 2 through 8 hit against 9 through Ace. How about you experienced players? Try it my way for two months. Record your wins and losses when the "eleven" situation arises. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the results.
