When your luck goes bad

Even the best of gamblers go through losing streaks. The key to survival is to minimize your losses during losing streaks and maintain good wagering habits under fire.

In order to do that, keeping your focus and keeping things in perspective are important. I’ve just gone through a 6 session losing streak and was able to minimize the losses.

1.     Money lost is money gone. Scale back your wagering amounts. We’ve all done it. Gone back to the tables with fire in our eyes determined to win back our losses. If you can tell yourself that the money you lost is gone it should keep you from chasing.

2.     Keep playing the same way you did when you are winning. We’re all guilty of second guessing ourselves when we lose, then compounding matters by making winning hands losers by making the wrong decisions. Play the same way all the time and accept that it’s the luck of the cards instead of cursing yourself for making a dumb play. Be consistent, win or lose.

3.     Some things are out of your control. Try and remember that when you won a ton of money you were not a genius, and when you go on a losing streak, you are not all of a sudden dunce or a loser. Too many people think they are god’s gift at gambling when they get hot, and then curse their luck when they lose. It’s called gambling for a reason.

4.     Trust your instincts. If you don’t feel lucky, don’t push it. If you feel lucky, double up your bet. Many times a person can walk away a small winner, when they lost more hands than they won just by watching the cards, getting a feel for when to cut back or increase their wager.

5.     Don’t fund your account too large or take a ton of money with you with the idea you are going to make your losses back in one session. Losing streaks can reach epic proportions. If you are destined to win, it shouldn’t take much to get on a roll and a small bankroll should be enough. When things are going bad too many people tend to get angry and make things worse by throwing more money down when their attitude is not good, the dealer is hot and the players next to them are making mistakes. The last 4 times playing blackjack I purposely took less money with me and although I lost, it wasn’t enough to curse about. If you lose 4 times in a row for $100 each time, but win $500 or $1000 on the 5th time, you’ve managed your money well and beaten the house odds.

6.     Greed. I set smaller goals when a losing streak is happening. Nothing worse in my mind, then getting hot after a losing streak, then eventually losing because I stayed at the tables too long. This also applies to walking away even when it becomes apparent the cards are not falling and you’ve been lucky just to be at even.
