Casino Gambling and Ego Battles

Lack of control over one's ego can be a big enemy of the casino gambler. One of the worst displays comes when a player makes his losses too personal.

Casinos don't pick out enemies from the thousands of players they host daily, so why should players make certain casinos enemies of theirs just because they left one with less money than they brought?

In my world dollars are dollars.  If one casino beats me for $100 and then I go to another casino and win $120, I am up $20 am I not?  Well to far too many gamblers, the belief is they won $120 and the other casino “owes” them the $100 they lost.  How silly does this thinking seem when you are reading here safely away from the heat of the battle?

Poker players are some of the worst when it comes to controlling their ego.  An opponent runs a great bluff on a player and the loser sinks in his seat.  It often happens that player's attention now gets focused on how he is going to get back at the opponent even though bluffing is a regular part of the game.  Other players could be donating money freely, but our hero only wants the chips of his new enemy.

Think about how many times you asked friends when gambling how they are doing, what have the answers been?  “I’m about even” or “down a bit” starts the reply, but almost inevitably there is some sad story about how some dealer or machine ruined him on his road to riches.  Even worse your friend probably could tell you within a few dollars how much certain casinos have ‘gotten him for”, yet he may not really know how he stands overall because all he cares about anymore is his personal battles with a few casinos.

You just can’t afford to think like this as a reasonable gambler.  Whether you win money from a slot jackpot, a nice roll at the crap table, or betting on the Super Bowl, the money spends the same.  It doesn’t hurt to consider how you do at each individual game to better determine what you should play, but always remember what matters most is how much you win or lose overall from all your gambling activities.

There are many tricks you can try to employ to keep yourself focused on this goal.  One of the best is to begin every hand or play thinking you are even.  You may be buried for your day’s session, but as they say the dice and cards don’t care. The next roll might be a winner, the next spin on the slot machine may hit a jackpot, and the next draw might give you a royal flush.

Everyday there are winners and losers in every casino.  Casinos whether online or land-based generally strive to treat players well no matter how they might be doing on any given day.  It serves the gambler well to look at the casinos in the same manner.  Each casino is merely a place to play and not some competing entity you must beat in order to satisfy your ego.

As with many things in our world, ego drives important decisions but rarely in a positive way.  Control and balance don't work well with an overanxious ego so work to make sure yours is in check and remain focused on your main goal: winning money.  Most of all, avoid getting yourself into imagined battles with an unconcerned opponent and you will avoid the mess countless gamblers get themselves into.
