Casino gambling bankroll II |

Roulette was a challenge but he had a system that couldn't miss. Blackjack was a no brainer. He knew every strategy move to make because he had basic strategy from the books down to a T. Craps would be the springboard to untold riches.
Poker lovers would feel his sting and his only problem was how to get the profits back home to ole Jersey. Flying was too expensive, almost $70 round trip, and he wanted to save as much as he could of his $3,000 bankroll. The alternative was the Greyhound bus. It would take three days and make mega stops but it was only about $30 and he could bring his own sandwiches and desserts. Everything was set our boy was making the move. On a Sunday night in July of 1960, several of his buddies drove him to Newark where he boarded his bus to the end of the rainbow. Throughout the trip he practiced his blackjack and even got into a couple of poker sessions with some people that got on in Chicago. His casino gambling bankroll got a little improvement. On a Wednesday afternoon, about 3 P.m., the bus pulled into downtown Las Vegas and first order of business was to get a room. with the $3,000 burning a bole in his pocket, he managed to hold off any attack on the tables until he was set up. Since $3,000 was more than enough to make his mark, he deposited most of it into the local bank and headed off to the tables.
The California Club was the first stop and then the plan was to visit Binions, the Golden Nugget, and the Fremont Hotel. He didn't wanna arouse anyone from seeing him take money from one casino; he wanted merely to pick up a grand or two in one house and then move to the next. At the California Club, he started with roulette and ran into a losing streak. He dropped a couple of bucks but figured he would recoup it that night at the Golden Nugget, where there was a load of blackjack tables. That was great because he was an excellent blackjack player. Of course that was back in Jersey where the competition was usually people who had never heard of basic blackjack strategy and then again he was doing the dealing. But hey, blackjack is blackjack and so what that the dealer had the cards. He knew it was only a matter of a few hours until his earlier losses would be recouped and a profit added to his wallet. A few hours later he chalked up the losses to beginner's (bad) luck. Hey, tomorrow was another day and be still had almost $2,000 to get his money back. I won't go through the grizzly details of how that stupendously large bankroll got hammered over the next two days. It seems that everything was going a little downhill. He withdrew the last of his money from the bank on Thursday night. That great big bankroll was being whittled down little by little but hey, it was only a temporary setback to our ingenious hero. Surely he would recover everything and set sail for that $100,000 jackpot. Pretty soon that bankroll was a handful of $5 chips. I was broke by Friday night. To be continued ... |
