Before explaining how to play doubles and splits properly, I like to talk about wagering within your comfort zone. Too many players put too much of their casino bankroll on the initial play and hesitate on doubling or splitting. The prime dealer cards for doubling your bets are 4,s, 5’s & 6’s. Twos and threes are okay too, but generally best done when doubling 10 or 11, or splitting.

Doubling and splitting when the dealer is showing a 4, 5 or 6.

•    Always double with any cards that total 7 to 11.
•    Always double with any split less than 9’s. My favorite is getting splits, when the dealer has the optimum bust cards. The opportunity is there for tripling or even quadrupling your original wager when another card is dealt on top of your split card. For example, split 4’s becoming 10 & 11 when the dealer lays a 5 and 6 on top.
•    Always double down with an Ace against a dealer face card. You might lose a few at the beginning, but if you stick to your guns the advantage is in your court over the long haul.
•    Sometimes double down with a 6 or 5 if the dealer is showing a 6. I say sometimes because circumstances dictate your play. If you’re up, the dealer is cold and the original wager is not heavy, then take a chance. If you’re down to your last few dollars, be satisfied with a win to get your cash flow back.
